Humectants are often added to skincare products to help moisturize and condition the skin. These ingredients are hygroscopic, meaning that they hold water. Different humectants have different water-binding abilities. For example, hyaluronic acid is a humectant that is able to absorb 1000x its weight in water. When used in cosmetics, humectants retain water at the skin’s surface and hydrate dehydrated skin.
